Dwain Clifford focuses his practice on insurance-coverage litigation, serving as coverage counsel to insureds being defended by insurance-defense counsel or in adjusting a claim, broker-malpractice litigation, general commercial litigation, and construction law. For nearly 25 years, he has represented a wide variety of plaintiffs and defendants in complex business litigation and has experience litigating cases in state and federal courts in Oregon, Washington, Texas, and Idaho. Mr. Clifford had been selected to the Oregon Super Lawyers “Rising Stars” list, and is currently honored with the “Super Lawyer” distinction. He has also been listed in The Best Lawyers in America for Litigation – Construction.

Before co-founding MWCC, Mr. Clifford practiced for 19 years with Ball Janik LLP, where he served as Chair of the firm’s Insurance Recovery practice. Mr. Clifford previously practiced with Thompson & Knight LLP, in Dallas, Texas, where he handled a wide variety of cases, including general commercial litigation, medical malpractice, personal-injury defense, and product-liability defense.

Mr. Clifford earned his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 2000. During law school, he served as an Associate Editor for the Texas Law Review and worked as a research assistant for a professor writing an article on class actions. Before attending law school, Mr. Clifford was a high-school teacher and yearbook adviser in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and he taught reading and writing to sixth-grade students in New Braunfels, Texas.

Chapter 13 of the Oregon State Bar’s treatise on insurance law, “Business Interruption and Extra Expense,” was written by Mr. Clifford. He has served on the faculty of numerous legal-education seminars, including presentations related to coverage for Covid-19 business interruption and, most recently, for issues and disputes arising in the context of excess and umbrella coverage. He has also served on the Local Rules Committee for the United States District Court for the District of Oregon, including time as its chairperson.
